Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Why pray to Mary? Because she always leads us to her Son. “Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye” (John 2:5). These are the prayers the Church has used for centuries to ask her help, from one of the oldest prayers to Our Lady we know to the litany sung at Loreto. Pray them with confidence.

When to pray them
By custom, the Angelus is prayed three times a day: in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.
From Easter Sunday to Pentecost, the Regina Caeli is prayed in its place.
Pray the Memorare in any need.
The Church sings the Hail, Holy Queen at the close of the day.
The prayers
Each prayer is given in its traditional English form, followed by the Latin where the Church has one. Accent marks in the Latin show which syllable to stress.
The Angelus
“What we have to say about the Angelus is meant to be only a simple but earnest exhortation to continue its traditional recitation wherever and whenever possible” (St. Paul VI, Marialis Cultus 41).

The Memorare
A medieval prayer, traditionally attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Pray it in any need.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Hail, Holy Queen
An ancient Marian antiphon, sung by the Church at the close of the day and at the end of the Rosary (Rosarium Virginis Mariae 37). The Dominicans sing it every night in procession after Compline, a custom begun by Bl. Jordan of Saxony, St. Dominic’s successor.
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

We Fly to Thy Protection
One of the oldest prayers to Our Lady that we know. “From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of ‘Mother of God,’ to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs” (Catechism 971).
We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Sub tuum præsídium confúgimus, sancta Dei Génetrix; nostras deprecatiónes ne despícias in necessitátibus; sed a perículis cunctis líbera nos semper, Virgo gloriósa et benedícta. Amen.
The Magnificat
Mary’s own song (Luke 1:46–55, Douay-Rheims), prayed by the Church every evening at Vespers. It is “the song both of the Mother of God and of the Church” (Catechism 2619).
My soul doth magnify the Lord.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

The Litany of Loreto
The Church’s litany of Our Lady, approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. “Mother of Mercy,” “Mother of Hope,” and “Solace of migrants” were added in 2020 (Congregation for Divine Worship, letter of 20 June 2020). After “pray for us” is said once, it is repeated after each invocation.

The Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows
Attributed to Pope Pius VII, who is said to have written it during his captivity under Napoleon. English text as published by EWTN; the closing prayer is the traditional collect of the Seven Sorrows. It remembers the Seven Sorrows of Mary: the prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:34–35), the flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13–15), the loss of Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:43–45), meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, the Crucifixion (John 19:25–30), receiving His body (John 19:38–40), and His burial (John 19:41–42).

The Dominican Litany of Our Lady
The Order of Preachers' own litany to Our Lady, prayed in times of trouble. Tradition says Bl. Humbert of Romans, Master of the Order, had the friars pray it in the 1250s, when the Order was under attack. The trouble passed, and cardinals are said to have warned, “Beware the litanies of the Friars Preachers, for they work wonders.” In “Maiden Lamb of God” the Latin (Agna Dei) speaks to Mary.
